Washington Metro Objectivism Discussion (WMOD)
June 21, 1995 Meeting
"What is Objectivity?"
by David Saum
The Wednesday June 21 meeting of WMOD will feature
a talk by WMOD founder David Saum. This is the last meeting
of WMOD until September. The talk will examine the
foundations of the idea of objectivity which forms the basis
for Ayn Rand's philosophy of Objectivism. Saum presents
the hypothesis that objectivity is a unique invention of
Western civilization. Its roots extend back at least as far
as Homer's Iliad. Saum argues that developments in objectivity
have led to three revolutions in the way we think about thinking
itself: the first in 4th century BC Greece, the second in 17th
century Europe, and the third is just beginning today on the
basis of Ayn Rand's ideas.
David Saum is a physicist and entrepreneur working on
problems related to building airtightness, ventilation and
indoor air quality. He holds several patents and has published
many scientific papers. During April he worked in Russia on
an international research team that studied the possibilities
for energy conservation in Russian apartment buildings. Saum
has been studying Objectivism since the 1960s.
