Washington Metro Objectivism Discussion (WMOD)

    "Is Objectivism Compatible with Deism?"

             By Jerome Tuccille

Jerome Tuccille's talk will focus on the ideas that
attracted him to Objectivism initially and the issues
that eventually drove him away. In his view Rand's
accomplishments were monumental, but her eccentricities
and authoritarianism contradicted her basic philosophy.
Tuccille will discuss Rand's views in some detail,
then take a look at her assertion that a belief in a
deity and the spiritual realm is irrational. He will
argue that it does not necessarily require a leap of
faith to conclude that a deity and a spiritual world
exists. There is enough anecdotal evidence, plus
first-hand experience, for rational people to conclude
that physical death does not mark the end of our
existence.

Jerome Tuccille is the author of 22 books, including
the libertarian classic "It Usually Begins with Ayn
Rand"; a sequel "It Still Begins with Ayn Rand";
"Radical Libertarianism"; best-selling biographies
of Trump, Rupert Murdoch, and the Hunt family; the
novel "Wall Street Blues"; and others. He is
currently working on a biography of Alan Greenspan
and plans to follow it with a comprehensive biography
of Ayn Rand.

In 1974, Tuccille was the Libertarian candidate for
Governor of New York. He taught a course on
libertarianism at the New School for Social Research
in New York City and worked as a stockbroker and
financial writer on Wall Street for many years.
He is currently a vice president with a major mutual
fund company in the area of shareholder communications.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Tuccille was
closely associated with many of the key figures
in Ayn Rand's Objectivist movement, including
economist Murray Rothbard, and he maintains an open
dialogue with neo-Objectivists Barbara Branden,
Chris Sciabarra, and others.

              PREVIOUS MEETING

Thanks again to Tibor Machan for his Sunday, March 19
talk on his new book "Ayn Rand". Approximately 35 people
attended and questions lasted until the restaurant closed.

WHEN AND WHERE IS THE WMOD MEETING?

Please join WMOD on Sunday, April 30. Anyone who is
interested in rational discussion of Ayn Rand's ideas is welcome.
Note that our meeting location is Metro accessible. You can
either join us for drinks at 6:30 with dinner at 7 PM and/or for
the talk (free) at 8:15 PM at the Hunan Palace in Rosslyn, VA
just across the Key Bridge from Georgetown. The street address is
1812 North Moore Street. If you come by Metro, get off at the
Rosslyn Metro Exit and the Hunan Palace is only a few feet away.
Take the street exit on N. Moore Street (across street from Roy
Rogers/Burger King), go out of Metro and take a left, and the
Palace is a few feet down N. Moore Street. If you drive, there is
a parking garage (Allstate) next door to the Palace that is free
after 6:00 PM. Due to construction you may have to go down the
ramp to the underground level. There will be a $15 fixed price
dinner (including tax and tip), or you can order from the menu.

Please RSVP to WMOD at (703) 820-7696 before noon on Sunday
4/30 so that we can tell the restaurant how many tables to set
up and how many to expect for dinner. For more information,
call the Hunan Palace at (703) 528-8188, or call David Saum
at (703) 820-7696 (W) or (703) 671-5119 (H).

                  FUTURE MEETINGS

WMOD meetings are generally held on the third Wednesday of each
month. We are always looking for new stimulating meeting topics
related to Objectivism. Please contact WMOD if you have
suggestions for meeting topics and locations, or if you can
volunteer some time to arrange meetings.
