REPORT ON MAY 15, 2004 MEETING On May 15, 2004 the meeting of the Central Virginia Gold Prospectors group was called to order. President, Ben Vaughan, greeted everyone and welcomed guests and prospective new members. There were 29 present. The minutes of the April meeting were read and the Treasurer's Report was given. Printed permission slips were passed out to members. These are just like the permission slips hunters use except they have been adapted to gold prospecting. Old business was called for: The proposed meeting and outing at the home of Bob & Sandy Stowe was discussed and approved. (SEE ATTACHED PAGE) The Northern Virginia Prospectors Club and an organization called Women in Mining have been invited to join us. The Women in Mining President contacted us about joining us in some prospecting activities and we thought this would be a good opportunity. One of their objectives is the education of school students and the public about minerals. Next the question of our getting "Not for Profit" status was brought up and it was noted that further research is being done on this matter. Ben Vaughan met with a landowner and spent an afternoon checking a piece of property that we may be able to lease. He made an offer and is now waiting for a reply. The land is in Goochland. A vote was taken and passed giving Ben Vaughan authority to negotiate for a parcel of land to lease on behalf of CVGP. This brought up some questions about any piece of land we may be able to lease and how it would be regulated. Some of the questions were who can use, how is it to be monitored, how is it to be paid for (out of treasury or a fee to users and/or guests). Suggestions are welcome. The subject of what constitutes an "active member" was then brought up. During the March meeting there was a discussion and then a motion and vote as to what constitutes an "active member". It was decided that it is a member who has EITHER paid the $10 contribution or who has been to a meeting within the past year. Ben wanted to know if anyone is interested in going to North Carolina as a group again. If you are, contact him. The subject of dredging in Virginia was discussed and again it is emphasized that there is to be no dredging in Virginia at this time. If you have a dredge, please let Sandy or Grace know the kind and size. PLEASE, DO NOT CONTACT MEMBERS OF THE VMRC OR ANY OTHER OFFICIAL GROUP. THIS IS BEING HANDLED BY GRACE CARTWRIGHT AND BEN WARNER AND THEY WILL KEEP US NOTIFIED OF ANY HAPPENINGS. The drawing for the gold nuggets and a bag of concentrate was then held. The lucky winners were very pleased. The meeting was then adjourned. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ It is with sadness that I inform you of the passing of one of our members. Ronald E. Popielarz (most of us knew him as Ron Pope) died suddenly Monday morning, May 17th, at his residence in Shipman. Ron was one of the founding offiers of Central Virginia Gold Prospectors and served as the Secretary-Treasurer for several terms. Please keep him and his family in your thoughts and prayers. -------------------------
